American holds off Montsho to win Doha 400 metres

Allyson Felix edged out Amantle Montsho to win the 400 metres at the first Diamond League meeting of the year in Doha. The triple world 200m champion set a world-leading time of 50.33 seconds in taking the win, with Botswana's Montsho only 0.08s back in second place. Montsho closed up to Felix's shoulder around the halfway mark but could not overhaul her in the latter part of the race. Felix, who won 21 of her 22 races last year, says she is still considering whether she will run both the 200m and 400m at this year's World Championships in Daegu. America swept the first three places in the women's 100m hurdles, as Kellie Wells equalled her personal best of 12.58s to lead home Danielle Carruthers and Lolo Jones.

Success

There was more success for the USA in the men's 200m, Walter Dix taking the win in 20.06s despite appearing to run out of his lane. Michael Rimmer of Britain impressed in the 800m as he finished second to Kenyan Asbel Kiprop, who clocked a time of 1:44.72. Yenew Alamirew delighted the noisy Ethiopian contingent in the crowd as he won the 3,000m in a time of 7:27.26, making him the ninth fastest of all time in the event. In the field events, Teddy Tamgho of France comfortably won the triple jump with a leap of 17.49m, 40cm clear of Bahamian Leevan Sands. America took another victory in the high jump, with Jesse Williams jumping 2.33m to seal the win while home favourite Mutaz Essa Barshim came third by equalling his personal best of 2.31m.
