Yankees legend nears milestone

Derek Jeter pulled within three hits of 3,000 for his career but his efforts were in vain as the New York Yankees slipped to a 5-3 defeat against the Cleveland Indians. Jeter lined up a double in three at-bats against Cleveland's Justin Masterson but the pitcher shut out the Yankees for eight scoreless innings to help his side claim victory. Cincinnati Reds blew an eight-run lead but still managed to beat the St Louis Cardinals 9-8 and avoid a three-game sweep after pinch-hitter Ramon Hernandez doubled in the go-ahead run in the 13th inning. Alexi Ogando allowed four hits over seven innings in his last start before the All-Star break as the Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with an 13-5 victory. Wilson Ramos decided a game of two-run homers with a suicide squeeze, driving in Michael Morse in the seventh inning to lift the Washington Nationals to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Oakland Athletics won the finale of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners with a 2-0 victory - thanks largely to Guillermo Moscoso allowing just two hits in seven innings. Eric Hosmer hit a home run as the Kansas City Royals saw off the Chicago White Sox 4-1 while Mike Stanton hit a one-out solo homer in the 10th inning to help the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies. Miguel Cabrera homered during a three-run seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers overcame the Los Angeles Angels 5-4.

Brewers boost

Pinch-hitter Casey McGehee launched a three-run homer in the seventh inning, putting behind him weeks of frustration, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Evan Longoria snapped out of his slump with three hits and four RBIs, helping the Tampa Bay Rays avoid a sweep again with a 12-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer as Jair Jurrjens earned his National League leading 12th win in the Atlanta Braves' 9-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies while the Boston Red Sox claimed a 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Houston Astros snapped a five-game losing streak with an 8-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates while the match between the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants went to a 14th inning before the Giants clinched a 6-5 triumph.
