Lyle Overbay produced a match-winning effort on his first start for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Phillies.

West beats East in National League clash

Lyle Overbay marked his first start for the Arizona Diamondbacks with a match-winning effort as the National League's Western leaders downed the Eastern pacesetters the Philadelphia Phillies. With Arizona 2-1 down heading into the ninth - Overbay having already contributed an RBI single - he struck a go-ahead double to turn the game his side's way. The Atlanta Braves collected a second consecutive walk-off win, with Martin Prado's two-out single serving up a 2-1 success over the San Francisco Giants in the 11th inning. Randall Delgado pitched six clear frames to lock down the Giants. It also took 11 innings to separate St Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, with the latter coming through 5-4. Neil Walker fastened things in the bottom of the ninth after Matt Holliday had put the Cardinals ahead at the top. That cleared the way for Garrett Jones to belt a leadoff homer and seal the win.

Quick start

Washington Nationals mined three runs in the first inning to tee up a 6-4 win over Cincinnati Reds. Michael Morse and Ian Desmond provided the offensive muscle to hand Chien-Ming Wang his second win of the campaign. Florida Marlins edged Colorado Rockies 6-5, Central leaders Milwaukee Brewers took a walk-off 2-1 win against Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres downed New York Mets 6-1. Houston Astros were dead and buried against the Chicago Cubs until Brian Bogusevic blew the bases with a match-winning grand slam in the ninth for a 6-5 success. In the American League, Justin Verlander hurled his 18th win of the season - the highest in the MLB - as Detroit Tigers defeated Minnesota Twins 7-1. Verlander went clear for 7 2/3 innings, while his rival starter Nick Blackburn coughed up five runs inside five innings.
Honours even
The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox each claimed a win in a double-header, Rays avenging a 3-1 reverse in the opener with a 6-2 success in the follow-up. Red Sox starter Jon Lester delivered the first result, allowing one run and three hits in seven frames, and Jeff Niemann matched him with a complete game in match two. The New York Yankees took advantage of Boston's neutral day to open a half-game lead over them in the Eastern conference thanks to a 9-7 victory over Kansas City Royals. Their win was built around Danny Duffy's three-run homer in the fourth. Texas Rangers beat Los Angeles Angels 7-3 to extend their Western conference lead, and the Chicago White Sox edged a 14-inning affair 8-7 over the Cleveland Indians. The Oakland Athletics' offense purred as eight men shared 12 hits on the way to an 8-4 win over Baltimore Orioles, while Toronto Blue Jays were even more prolific in a 13-7 defeat of Seattle Mariners.
