Britain's Helen Jenkins was just denied victory in the World Triathlon Series event in Chicago.

Jenkins was up front for most of the race, but she lost ground in the closing stages of the 10km run and was passed by Gwen Jorgensen, who made history as the first woman to claim six titles.

The American had been tied on five with Australia's Emma Moffatt and Paula Findlay of Canada.

A tough 1,500 metre swim opened the event with Jenkins making the most of it to get into a leading group, and by the time the field had finished their 40kms on the bike, she had more than a minute advantage.

But that proved not to be enough as Jorgensen took the lead on the final lap and crossed the line in one hour, 55 minutes, 33 seconds - 20 seconds ahead of a fading Jenkins.

Jenkins, who will represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games, said: "I knew she (Jorgensen) was catching and because it was so hot and humid, and I'm not great in the humidity, I really was just trying to keep myself together, keep myself in one piece. I couldn't afford to back down because I knew Gwen was coming.

"We tried to keep pushing. It's a really tough course to keep a group working because there are so many dead turns.

"I loved the swim today, I had a good swim, it was so choppy, it was great fun."
