In between teams

The Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas explained why a playground scrap left him supporting Spurs... and Liverpool.

The Inbetweeners decide to forgive Soccer AM's Bobbie

Joe Thomas may have made his name on a show called The Inbetweeners, but he admitted to Soccer AM that he is also in between football teams. Joe joined his co-stars Simon Bird and Blake Harrison on the orange sofa on Saturday morning to talk about their love of comedy and football. And when Max and Helen asked them which team they supported, Simon revealed he followed Crystal Palace and Blake confessed to being a Millwall fan. However, Joe - who plays Simon Cooper in the show - said he supported Liverpool... and also Tottenham! "When I was really little I supported Liverpool," he explained. "And then when I went to school there was a fight organised between the Liverpool fans and the Spurs fans. I was about four and all I remember is somebody jumping on my back and I was terrified. "Basically I got beaten up so I switched. That's how it happened."

Qualified referee

Simon, who plays geeky Will McKenzie in The Inbetweeners, also revealed that he is a qualified referee and used to officiate over junior matches. But he says the fact he used to don the black shirt doesn't mean he is rubbish at football - as proved by the strong performance of The Inbetweeners team in the recent Soccer Six celebrity tournament. Unfortunately, they were knocked out on penalties by rock band Babyshambles in the semi-finals - but Simon pointed out that Pete Doherty's men had a pretty useful ringer in their ranks. "I was in goal for our team and I am tidy, I am tidy..." he boasted "We had a penalty shoot-out against Babyshambles... and in goal for Babyshambles was Welsh international Neville Southall..." That's probably a fair excuse for the defeat.
Harsh response
The Soccer AM team reached the final of the same tournament and Simon explained that one particular member of the crew was not particularly friendly on the day. Bobbie was playing in goal for the Soccer AM side that day, but when Simon asked to borrow his gloves he was met with a harsh response. "He point blank refused", Simon explained. "He said they were special goalie gloves that were moulded to his hands! "I'll forgive you and we can move on... but be careful next time!"
