A new look for PWEI

Pop Will Eat Itself joined Soccer AM to talk about their new line-up and North London bragging rights!

Rockers return with new record after 15 years

Pop Will Eat Itself are back and 'ready to rock it'! Cited as the main influence behind both The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails, PWEI were last seen briefly six years ago, having parted ways in 1996. One of the first groups to combine dance, rap and rock music, the band was at the forefront of the British music scene during the late '80s and early '90s. Their new single 'Chaos and Mayhem' is their first record release in 15 years, however frontman Graham Crabb is the only original member remaining from the 1986 line-up. The new line-up includes former Apollo 440 singer Mary Byker and he admitted he couldn't wait to get back on stage. "It's going to be fun because I didn't play in the original line-up," he told Soccer AM. "I played in a band around the same time - Gaye Bykers and Acid if anyone remembers them. "But we sort of came up together with 'The Poppies' and in fact you'll find that they used to jump on stage with us and drop their trousers and that sort of stuff occasionally! "And when (Graham) phoned me up and said 'do you want to do Pop Will Eat Itself?' I thought 'yeah, that could be fun'. "For me it's just got me back on stage and with a really cool band, the new line-up is really cool."

Sadist

Along with their single the boys have a new album out with an intriguing title; 'New Noise Designed by a Sadist'. So is there a 'sadist' in the band!? "I'm sure it's something that my dad used to say," explained Crabb. "He'd sit on your bicycle which is way too small for him and he'd go 'oh this was designed by a sadist'! And it just struck me as a good analogy."

Bragging rights

The two rockers might be in sync musically but they couldn't be more different when it comes to the beautiful game, and it's Crabb who holds all the bragging rights after last week's North London derby. The Tottenham fan was in jubilant mood and he was happy to rub salt into the wounds of Gooner Byker, who saw his beloved Arsenal go down 2-1 at White Hart Lane. "The tide has turned!" he proclaimed. "At the moment I'd say we were better, yeah!" As ever Helen and Max had lots more questions for them and to hear what they had to say, simply click on the video at the top of the page.
