The Pittsburgh Penguins stayed on top of the NHL Atlantic Division with a 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars.

James Neal scored twice against his former employers and Matt Cooke added a penalty shot as the Penguins made light of the absence of Sidney Crosby, despite falling behind to Eric Nystrom's goal.

The second-placed New York Rangers scored four times in the third period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1.

Brandon Dubinsky, Sean Avery, Dan Girardi, Ryan Callahan and Brad Richards all found the net for the Rangers.

The New Jersey Devils, lost ground as they were beaten 3-1 by the Washington Capitals, who reclaimed the South-East Division lead.

Alex Ovechkin cancelled out Adam Larsson's opener and Jason Chimera and Marcus Johansson sealed victory in the third.

The Buffalo Sabres claimed a 5-1 win over North-East rivals the Ottawa Senators, Derek Roy with a goal and two assists and Drew Stafford adding three assists as rookie goaltender Jhonas Enroth made 36 saves.

The Chicago Blackhawks comfortably lead the Central Division after a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames, while divisional rivals the Detroit Red Wings saw goalie Jimmy Howard record a shut-out as the Edmonton Oilers were beaten 3-0.

The Anaheim Ducks held off a Vancouver Canucks fightback in the third to win 4-3.
