Evgeni Malkin struck 32 seconds into overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins claimed a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.
It was Malkin's second strike of the game, with the 28-year-old also finding the back of the net with a powerplay goal midway through the second period to send the game to overtime.
Sidney Crosby's ninth goal of the season had given the Penguins the lead but strikes from Milan Lucic and Joe Morrow, his first in the NHL, put Boston in charge until Malkin had the final say.
The New York Islanders continued their superb recent run - although they were very nearly denied by the Philadelphia Flyers' goaltender Steve Mason, who made 46 saves in the game.
However, with the score goalless as the game went into the shootout, Frans Nielsen and John Tavares finally broke his resistance to seal a 1-0 victory for the Islanders, their fourth successive win and their ninth in 10 matches.
Stephen Weiss scored twice, after Gustav Nyquist and Riley Sheahan, as the Detroit Red Wings edged to a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators, whose goals from Kyle Turris, Erik Karlsson and Chris Neil were in vain.
Two goals from Jason Zucker and one each for Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise helped the Minnesota Wild to a comfortable 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers, whose sole score of the evening came from Shawn Thornton.
