Hideo Itami thwarts The Ascension - and pays the price

The Vaudevillains are the new No 1 Contenders to the NXT Tag Team Titles after winning a battle royal in Orlando on Thursday night.
Simon Gotch and Aiden English profited from Hideo Itami distracting The Ascension to send Viktor and Konnor tumbling over the ropes and earn a showdown with Sin Cara and Kallisto.
The Ascension were dominant during the battle royal, eliminating Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger, Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake, and Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady.
But the emergence of Itami threw them off their game and they quickly punished the Japanese grappler when their hopes of securing a title match were extinguished.
Viktor and Konnor floored Itami with Fall of Man and left him lying in the ring, though the wrestler formerly known as Kenta later warned The Ascension that if they wanted a war next week, he would bring a friend as back-up.
Sami Zayn’s task next week, meanwhile, is a clash with Tyler Breeze as he continues to prove he deserves a title tussle with NXT Champion Adrian Neville.
NXT General Manager William sanctioned Zayn-Breeze after the former had overcome Titus O’Neil on Thursday evening, cracking The Big Deal with an exploder suplex and, finally, a Helluva Kick.
Elsewhere, two powerhouses came out on top – Bull Dempsey crushing Justin Gabriel with a diving headbutt and Baron Corbin dispatching Tony Briggs in less than 20 seconds.
Marcus Louis, meanwhile, bulldozed fellow Frenchman and onetime tag-team partner Sylvester LeFort, plus ex-hairdresser Carmella submitted Australian Diva Emma.
