GB long jumpers sidelined

Britain's top two long jumpers, Chris Tomlinson and Greg Rutherford, will miss the World Championships trials.

Tomlinson and Rutherford injured in training

Britain's top two long jumpers, Chris Tomlinson and Greg Rutherford, will miss this weekend's trials for the forthcoming World Championships in Daegu. Both athletes have picked up injuries in training and will not compete in Birmingham, where they will be praying two of their domestic rivals do not manage to achieve the qualifying standard. UK Athletics regulations state that the top two in the trials will be selected for the World Championships if they achieve the 'A' standard within the qualifying period, which ends on August 7. That would leave Tomlinson and Rutherford fighting it out for the one remaining place on the British team, but with the 'A' standard for the long jump set at a demanding 8.20 metres, the duo should be able to breathe easy. Tomlinson broke Rutherford's British record by five centimetres with a jump of 8.35m in the Diamond League meeting in Paris earlier this month - where Rutherford jumped 8.27m - but the next best British competitor is Julian Reid with 8.08m.
