The World Touring Car Championship round in Marrakech has been dropped from the calendar for the 2011 season.

WTCC will not race in Morocco in 2011

The World Touring Car Championship round in Marrakech has been dropped from the calendar for the 2011 season. The series has held races at the Moroccan street circuit for the past two seasons and was supposed to return on the first weekend of June this year. But the local promoter of the event failed to secure the required funding, leading to the FIA World Motor Sport Council removing it from the schedule. WTCC promoter Marcello Lotti says he is still confident that a replacement venue will be found in Europe. "Morocco is the only country in Africa today to host a world-class motorsport event," Lotti said. "After all the hard work and the considerable infrastructure investments made by the local promoter and the Government, it is regrettable to see Marrakech dropped from the calendar. "I know the organisers did all they could to avoid this sad decision. We are currently in negotiations with a couple of other racetracks in Central Europe to replace the event on the same date. "We should be ready to announce the location of the fourth race meeting of the season in one month's time."
