Gymnast Rebecca Downie has been named the Sportswoman Of The Month for May.
The 22-year-old from Nottingham topped the Sky Sports poll with 53 per cent of the vote after winning a gold medal in the uneven bars at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Sofia.
Downie was also a member of the British team which won the silver medal in the team final in Bulgaria.
A delighted Downie said: “It’s quite a big thing for gymnastics to be noticed. The priority really was the team and we knew that we wanted a team medal.
“Once we had done that we just wanted to enjoy individual event finals and I knew I had a chance of a medal and to come back with the gold was just an amazing achievement.
“I’ve had a little bit of a break but I am now back in the gym and making slow preparations towards the Commonwealth Games in a few months’ time and then, hopefully, the World Championships.”
Liverpool and England striker Natasha Dowie took second place in the poll with 17 per cent and American Serena Williams was third with 15 per cent following her Italian Open success.
Chelsea and England forward Eni Aluko was fourth with seven per cent, followed by cyclists Lucy Garner and Marianne Vos who both claimed four per cent of the vote.
