Host nation end British hopes of a first Champions Trophy

Great Britain's women saw their hopes of a first gold medal at the Champions Trophy ended by a 1-0 defeat to hosts and favourites Argentina in Rosario. The world champions dominated the first half and although Danny Kerry's side fought back somewhat after the break, they struggled to create chances against a disciplined defence. And had it not been for a number of good saves from Reading goalkeeper Beth Storry, particularly two from second-half penalty corners, the winning margin could have been greater. But second place was still the team's highest finish in the tournament, which is contested by the top eight sides in the world, and shows they should be contenders for a medal at the London Olympics. Great Britain beat Argentina 2-0 in a warm-up event a fortnight ago but this time the South Americans took control from the outset and put considerable pressure on the visitors. GB's defence, which had not conceded from a penalty corner in the competition, held out until the 28th minute when Silvina D'Elia slapped a fifth set-piece of the game through the legs of Storry. The goalkeeper redeemed herself with a good double from another penalty corner in last minute of half.

Chance

Leicester defender Crista Cullen, Britain's top scorer in the event, had GB's best chance of the game from a corner just prior to that that but her effort was deflected behind. The second half began much more positively for Kerry's side and they enjoyed more possession as Argentina sat on their advantage, but there was still no way through. Storry made two more brilliant low saves from penalty corners but it was the other end of the pitch where Britain needed some inspiration and the hosts were effective in minimising those opportunities. Britain head coach Danny Kerry said: "I thought Argentina played very well tonight. "They defended well, they didn't create too many opportunities and their defence held out. We started to get back into it in the second half but it wasn't to be. "We won four, drew one and lost just one in a major world level tournament. We've made history tonight winning the silver medal. "After yesterday's game we had three or four players trying to find their game, we know where we need to improve and we will go forward and work on those areas. "We have set ourselves high standards and I have to match the standards that the players have set themselves. That is the pressure I feel going into the Olympics."
