Lindsey Vonn made a dream return to the top of the podium by winning the women’s World Cup downhill at Lake Louise in Alberta.

The 30-year-old American was taking part in only her second race after a 349-day lay-off due to a shin fracture and two knee operations.

She finished eighth in her first race back on Friday, but returned a day later to lead home the first-ever clean sweep of World Cup podium places by the USA as she beat compatriots Stacey Cook and Julia Mancuso by 0.49 and 0.57 seconds respectively.

It was Vonn’s 15th win at the Canadian venue and her 60th World Cup success overall, leaving her only two short of the all-time record of 62 held by Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell.

"I fought so hard to be back where I am, at the top of the podium. It means the world to me, it's just unbelievable. It's like a dream day," said Vonn, whose boyfriend Tiger Woods was defying illness at the Hero World Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

"I never felt sidelined. I was supported by my friends, my family and my team. I always knew I could do it. I had confidence in myself."
