Favourite Gary Anderson has lost to Fabian Roosenbrand in the first round of the Lakeside BDO World Championships.
Second seed suffers fourth first-round exit in five years
Day two of the Lakeside BDO World Championships has produced a major first-round upset, with tournament favourite Gary Anderson sent packing by teenager Fabian Roosenbrand.
Anderson, seeded number two in Frimley Green, beat the best players both the BDO and the PDC could offer last year to win the International Darts League and the World Darts Trophy - but he lost 3-2 on Sunday to Roosenbrand, a 150-1 outsider from Holland.
The Scot was guilty of missing a whole host of doubles against Roosenbrand, who capitalised to take the opening set.
Anderson levelled but his Achilles Heel promptly returned with a vengeance as five more missed doubles in set three allowed Roosenbrand to go 2-1 ahead.
Once again, Anderson summoned his experience of the big stage to pull level - but it was Roosenbrand who took the decider.
Unenviable record
The result also means that Anderson continues his unenviable record of early exits, having now suffered a first-round departure four times in the past five years.
Anderson said afterwards: "The first round is just my voodoo in this tournament. I scored well but snatched my darts when throwing for doubles. My finishing was terrible.
"I don't know much about Fabian but even the Dutch don't seem to know much about him - but hats off to the lad, he did well.
"I didn't practise for the tournament but then I never practise, I just turn up so perhaps I deserved to lose.
"I will not lose much sleep over the defeat, I'll just go on to the next tournament."
Roosenbrand now plays Australian Simon Whitlock, who beat 16th seed Edwin Max 3-0, with Wales captain Martin Phillips also through after ousting another seed, the 13th-ranked Shaun Greatbatch, 3-1.
