Skroder treble sinks GB

Great Britain blew a two-goal lead against Norway in the Euro Challenge on Wednesday night.

Brits frozen out in Mont Blanc

Great Britain blew a two-goal lead against Norway in the Euro Challenge on Wednesday night, Per Age Skroder netting a hat-trick as the Norwegians won 5-3. Team GB, who opened their campaign with a 5-3 victory over Lithuania on Tuesday, continued in the same vein with Jonathan Phillips giving them a 25th minute lead. Skroder levelled on a powerplay but Leigh Jameson and a second from Phillips gave the Brits a 3-1 lead with a man over after 35 minutes. However, Skroder's second and a game-tying five-on-three powerplay marker from Mats Zuccarello Aaasan got Norway back in the contest in a second period goal-fest. Skroder completed his hat-trick three minutes into the final period before Norway notched their fourth powerplay goal of the night late on to secure victory.

Positives

GB head coach Paul Thompson said: "I couldn't be prouder, what an effort. This British team is without several experienced players, its certainly the youngest senior team I can remember being put into serious competition and just look at the performance we put in this evening against a first-class top side in Norway. "We can take nothing but positives out of this game and this tournament, its holding us in such stead for the World Championships in April. "Its hard to single guys out as everyone played hard and committed, however Leigh Jamison was outstanding and deserved his man of the match award. "Over the past few days we have all seen that the guys coming through the ranks and keen and eager to take over from them when their time comes. Its is an exciting time ahead for British hockey." Great Britain finish the tournament against hosts France on Thursday night minus the representatives from Belfast Giants and Sheffield Steelers, who are flying home early to prepare for Friday night's Elite League encounter at the Odyssey Arena.
