British sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis' Olympic dream has died after an Achilles injury ruled him out of Beijing.

British sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis' Olympic dream has died after an Achilles injury picked up during warm weather training in Cyprus ruled him out of the Games in Beijing. The former world junior 100m champion tore his Achilles during his spell at a training camp on the Mediterranean island and will now be forced to undergo surgery. Lewis-Francis is a defending Olympic champion after anchoring the British 4x100m relay team to the gold medal in Athens four years ago. The athlete is understood said to be distraught at missing the Games in Beijing this August. His training was understood to have gone brilliantly well during his wamr weather stint and his enthusiasm for the sport has been rekindled after a couple of very lean years when he has not realised his potential. It is not the first occasion the Midlander has been troubled by Achilles problems and on this occasion expert medical advice has been taken to have the problem finally sorted out.
