Pennsylvania thrower Young was involved in a thrilling final at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut, just edging out Brad Wethington 8-7.
Wethington in fact missed two darts at double to win the title himself, and Young had to nail a 13-darter to claim the $15,000 first prize.
Young pulled out a 13-darter to beat Dave Brocksmith and a 14-darter to account for 1994 World Matchplay winner Larry Butler, before also seeing off Bill Davis 7-5 in the semis.
"I'm overcome with the emotion of winning," said Young.
"It's the biggest win of my career and a big momentum boost for me to kick on now.
"It was a cracking game and fantastic to be a part of."
Wethington defeated Chirs White 7-6 in his semi-final, after previously beating Ray Carver - who is currently the top American in the PDC Order of Merit.
World champion John Part was unable to add the first North American title to his credentials as he was beaten 4-3 ion the third round by Buddy Lessig.
Number two seed Gerry Convery was even more disappointing as he was knocked out in the second round with a 4-1 defeat against Paul Lim.
