Chambers looms large with Olympic places up for grabs in Birmingham

Tyrone Edgar insists he does not fear British sprint rival Dwain Chambers ahead of the Olympic trials in Birmingham this weekend. Edgar has run 10.06 seconds this season, placing him behind only Chambers (10.05s) in the national standings. The top two at the trials normally earn spots in the Olympic team, with the third place at the selectors' discretion. This year, however, if Chambers finishes either first or second, it will be a High Court judge who makes the decision on his eligibility to run in Beijing. Chambers served a two-year ban after failing a doping test in 2003 and is currently barred for life by the British Olympic Association from representing them at the quadrennial competition, a ban that is subject to a legal challenge next Wednesday. "I'm not worried about Dwain," said Edgar. "There are a lot of very fast guys here, but I think that that is really positive for the sport.

Improving

"It's great to have such good competition as it can only make you better. "It would be absolutely fantastic if I got to the Olympics, it would be a dream come true, it's what everyone trains for, my aim is to really make it this year. "I've tried not to think about actually being there too much, I've got to do the work to get on the plane first. "I'm aiming to get through the heats tomorrow and be in the top two this weekend." Edgar injured his back when running into a shot putter on the warm-up track in Lille a fortnight ago but is now back to full fitness. "Fitness-wise, I am right where I want to be, I'm fighting fit and at the top of my game," he confirmed. Apart from Chambers and Edgar, defending champion Marlon Devonish, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Simeon Williamson and Craig Pickering, are forecast to be the main challengers for the podium places in Saturday's 100m final. The three days of action in Birmingham will also see Beijing medal hopes Phillips Idowu, Kelly Sotherton, Catherine Ohuruogu, Nicola Sanders, Jade Johnson, Jo Pavey and Goldie Sayers all taking part.
