British distance runner outlines preparation for New York marathon
Paula Radcliffe will compete in the Bupa Great South Run in preparation for her New York marathon title defence.
The 10-mile road race takes place in Portsmouth on October 26, the weekend before Radcliffe heads across the Atlantic to take part in her first 26-miler since the Beijing Olympics.
"We chose the 10-miler as it seemed to fit in well," said Radcliffe, after consultation with her manager and husband Gary Lough, from her Font Romeu training base in the French Pyrenees.
"I will continue my normal marathon build-up but the GSR (Great South Run) will replace my last tempo run and hopefully work really well in the ease-down period to sharpen up my legs and racing shape."
Radcliffe, seeking her third New York success, wanted a tough challenge and so took the decision to run 10 miles for the first time in almost 20 years.
She will face stiff opposition from fellow Briton Jo Pavey and Benita Johnson, Australia's former world cross country champion.
"The last time I remember racing over 10 miles was at the UK Championships in Chelmsford around 1990," added the 34-year-old.
"I think I squeezed under the hour and Bedford won the team race."
