Brace apiece from Dagenais and Talbot see Steelers home

Jody Lehman recorded his seventh shutout of the season to maintain Sheffield Steelers' nine-point lead at the top of the Elite League on Saturday. The in-form backstop weathered 44 shots on his goal during the Steelers 4-0 victory over the Edinburgh Capitals. Jason Cassells and Brad Bonello made their debuts for the home side but were unable to make an impact as Sheffield put their hosts under pressure from the off. Two goals apiece from Randy Dagenais and Joey Talbot by the end of the second period had effectively put the game to bed. Despite a spirited fightback from Edinburgh that saw them fire 24 shots to the visitors' nine, the outstanding Lehman stood firm at the net to ensure that the points went back to South Yorkshire. Wins from all their title rivals however meant that the Steelers were unable to extend their advantage at the top of the table.

Title hopes

Belfast Giants were given a fright by bottom club Basingstoke Bison and had to come back from two goals down to force overtime. Skipper George Awada led from the front with his overtime goal, scoring in the extra period to see the Giants home 5-4. Defending champions Coventry Blaze took it even closer to the wire, needing two goals in the last minute to force overtime against Machester Phoenix, Danny Stewart eventually came good for the Midlanders to end the game 7-6. In the day's other matches the Nottingham Panthers kept their title hopes alive with a 5-3 win over the Cardiff Devils and the Newcastle Vipers beat the struggling Hull Stingrays 3-2.
