British record-holder trails in last in 60 metres hurdles final

Sarah Claxton stormed from the track after squandering her chance of a medal at the European Indoor Championships in Turin on Friday night. The Olympic finalist equalled her own British record of 7.96 seconds in winning her semi-final of the 60 metres hurdles to be the fastest qualifier at the Oval Lingotto. But the 29-year-old then trailed in dead last in the final in 8.21secs, well adrift of winner Eline Berings of Belgium. Berings clocked 7.92s ahead of Lucie Skrobakova of the Czech Republic with Ireland's Derval O'Rourke claiming bronze. Claxton then walked straight through the mixed zone afterwards without talking to reporters, collected her tracksuit and headed for the warm-up track.

Frustration

In the men's event, Andy Turner could not hide his frustration after finishing fourth for the second championships in succession, missing out on a medal by an agonising 1/100th of a second. He was just caught on the line in a time of 7.62s with France's Ladji Doucoure winning ahead of defending champion Gregory Sedoc of Holland and Petr Svoboda of the Czech Republic. Britain's Allan Scott was eighth in 7.78. Earlier in the day, Mo Farah underlined his status as favourite for the 3,000 metres title with an assured performance, easing down to finish third in his heat and qualify comfortably for Saturday's final. Team-mates Nick McCormick and Mark Draper also qualified after finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the first heat, Draper taking more than two seconds off his personal best in the process.
Veteran advances
Elsewhere, veteran Donna Fraser continued to turn back the clock in her 14th major championship, the 36-year-old advancing to the final of the 400m. In the men's 400m, Richard Buck and Nick Leavey were third and fourth in an action-packed semi-final which saw defending champion David Gillick of Ireland sent crashing to the track. Gillick clashed with Romania's Ioan Vieru around the last bend, allowing Buck to move up into third and qualify for Saturday's final, with team-mate Leavey missing out in fourth. In the women's 800m, Marilyn Okoro and Jenny Meadows both came through their opening round to reach the semi-finals, but there was disappointment in the 1500m with Susan Scott and Hannah England both failing to advance from the heats after finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Meanwhile, British record holder Kate Dennison qualified for the pole vault final with a clearance of 4.40m but Samson Oni and Martyn Bernard both failed to reach the men's high jump final.
