Spaniard sets new world best in 4x100 medley relay final
Aschwin Wildeboer Faber has broken the 100 metres backstroke world record at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy.
The Spaniard set the new best of 52.38 seconds in the opening leg of the 4x100 medley relay final, an event his country won in a time of three minutes 34.22s.
Wildeboer Faber's time therefore beats the previous benchmark of 52.54s, set by American Aaron Peirsol when winning gold at last August's Beijing Olympics.
On Saturday, Italy's Federica Pellegrini reclaimed the women's 400 freestyle world record when she took gold in the final at the Games.
The four-yearly event, which has welcomed over 4,000 competitors from 23 countries in the region, officially began on Friday and runs for 11 days.
