A demon eventually reigns supreme in Los Angeles
WWE champion Randy Orton and John Cena were pitted together in a match that delivered thrills and spills at Summerslam on Sunday night.
The Viper and Cena have become well acquainted over the years, Orton with his slithery technique and trickery and Cena with his slick skills and power.
Styles make matches and this one at the Los Angeles Staples Centre certainly did not disappoint.
Cena pushed the Legacy leader to his very limits, only to be robbed by a disqualification when Orton deliberately pushed the referee.
Finishes
At the behest of chairman Vince McMahon, though, The Viper was ordered back into the ring and told another DQ defeat would cost him the title.
So what did Orton do? He walked out to earn a countout defeat, only to be sent back into the ring once again or face losing the gold.
A victory for the challenger then seemed all but certain until Orton used the ropes to claim the one...two...three.
This time a second referee intervened to overturn the result and the two gladiators went at it once again.
After security officials had dealt with an overzealous fan who attacked the referee, Orton pounced to deliver the RKO for a stunning triumph.
Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio had earlier successfully defended his crown against Dolph Ziggler in a fast, fluid encounter that set the standard at the top of the show.
And ECW champion Christian walked away with a lighting quick triumph over William Regal.
