American narrows the gap between himself and Bolt

Tyson Gay equalled the second fastest time in history for the 100m when he scorched to victory in the Shanghai Grand Prix on Sunday. The American made the most of Usain Bolt's absence and a legal tailwind of 2.0 m/s to streak home in 9.69 seconds, the same time Bolt ran when winning the Olympics 12 months ago. Gay was slowly out of the blocks but quickly recovered to lower his previous best of 9.71secs achieved when chasing home Bolt in the World Championships in August - a race in which the Jamaican took the record to 9.58. Gay, who showed no sign of the groin injury that has hampered his season, defeated Bolt's team-mate Asafa Powell, who clocked 9.85, with American Darvis Patton third in 9.89. Carmelita Jeter continued her strong finish to the season with a world-leading time of 10.64 in the women's 100, beating Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown and Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas by a wide margin. China's Liu Xiang made his first appearance since failing to start in his 110m hurdles heat at last summer's Olympic Games in Beijing. Liu posted the same time of 13.15 as Terrence Trammell, but the American was declared the winner.
