Briton strikes gold at championships in London

Britain's Beth Tweddle recovered from her disappointment on the uneven bars to claim gold on the floor at the Gymnastics World Championships. The 24-year-old from Liverpool took a fall on the bars in qualifying and failed to make the final, but was almost flawless on the floor as she became world champion for a second time. Tweddle was the first to compete in the final and performed a near-perfect routine to earn a score of 14.650 to the jubilation of the home crowd inside the O2 Arena in London. Her routine was the most difficult in the tournament and her rivals could not exceed her tally as she led from first to last. Colombian Jessica Gil Ortiz left the arena on a stretcher after landing on her neck, causing a lengthy delay to proceedings. When the competition resumed, Australian Lauren Mitchell scored 14.550 to take the silver medal while China's Sui Lu secured bronze with 14.300. Tweddle's success marked Britain's second medal of the championships, with Daniel Keatings managing a silver in the men's all-round event.
