World Cup season ends in record-breaking style

South Africa's Kathryn Meaklim, American Peter Marshall and Sweden's Therese Alshammar all set new world records to mark the end of the shortcourse World Cup season in Singapore. Meaklim clocked 4mins 22.88secs in the women's 400m individual medley, knocking nearly three seconds off the previous record set by Spain's Mareia Belmonte in Croatia last year. Marshall shaved a fraction of a second off his own 50m backstroke world record set in Stockholm earlier this month to touch in 22.61secs. "I chipped away a little each time and I finally swam a better time. It is pretty unique breaking your own record," said Marshall. "It's not something you do very often so it's special for me." Alshammar also smashed her own record in the final event of the day, touching in 24.28secs in the 50m butterfly after previously setting the world record of 24.46 in Stockholm.

Good choice

She pulled out of the 100m individual medley to concentrate on the butterfly. "I managed to get a personal best this morning in the IM which is very fast so I was happy," she said. "But the events were too close together tonight, so I decided to go with the 50m fly, which proved to be a good choice." The World Cup season has seen a total of 37 world records broken across events in Durban, Moscow, Stockholm and Berlin. That number of records is unlikely to be reached again with the majority achieved by athletes wearing the high-tech swimsuits that will be banned from January 1.
