Cena claims WWE Superstar of The Year award
The latest edition of Monday Night Raw hosted the 2009 WWE Slammy Awards!
Superstars from all three brands appeared on a special three-hour spectacular as WWE honoured the pick of the action from the past 12 months.
So which Superstars and Divas took home the coveted golden grapplers?
WWE Superstar of The Year
World heavyweight champion The Undertaker faced Randy Orton whilst John Cena would come up against CM Punk. The winners of these matches faced off later in the evening to determine the WWE Superstar of The Year.
In the end, it was former WWE champion John Cena who came out on top after he defeated Randy Orton in a thrilling main event, to go down in the history books as WWE's Superstar of 2009.
WWE Diva of The Year
The Diva of the Year Slammy Award was based upon the sexy, smart and powerful woman who won the most votes in an online poll featured on WWE's website. When the results finally came in, it was Maria who proved to be a hit amongst the WWE Universe.
Tag Team of The Year
Just one night after losing their Unified Tag Team Titles to D-Generation X at WWE TLC, Chris Jericho and The Big Show accepted the Slammy Award for Tag Team of the Year.
Later in the evening, Jerishow invoked their rematch clause, but a cruel twist of fate ensued as Triple H intentionally shoved the referee causing DX to lose the match by disqualification, meaning that no titles switched hands in the end.
Most Extreme Moment of The Year
Jeff Hardy may have been retired from the WWE by CM Punk but that never stopped The Charismatic Enigma from picking up a WWE Slammy Award!
Hardy's brutal Swanton Bomb from atop of a 20-foot high ladder at WWE Summerslam was indeed something special, as CM Punk will never ever forget.
Match of The Year
For the second year running, Shawn Michaels took home one of the highest honours in WWE, the Slammy Award for Match of the Year.
Michaels' encounter with The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 25, which bagged the award, will go down in history as one of the best wrestling matches of all time.
During his acceptance speech, HBK claimed that he can defeat The Deadman and even went so far as to challenge The Phenom to a match at WrestleMania "one more time".
Breakout Star of The Year
New WWE champion Sheamus had yet another reason to celebrate after the Irishman was acclaimed WWE's Breakout Superstar of The Year.
After receiving the award, Sheamus boasted about his victory at WWE TLC and insisted that Cena will never take back the WWE Championship from him.
Shocker of The Year
CM Punk retiring Jeff Hardy after their Steel Cage Match on SmackDown. CM Punk described this as his finest moment to date, and promised to become the WWE Superstar of The Year later in the evening.
However, the Straightedge Superstar found himself tapping out to an STF manoeuvre just minutes into his match against John Cena, much to the delight of the fans in attendance.
