Dutchman claims scalp of fifth seed at World Championship

Co Stompe produced a magnificent display to beat Mervyn King 4-2 in the second round of the Ladbrokes.com World Championship. The Dutchman averaged 99.86 and defied eight maximums from King to book his place in the last 16 at the Alexandra Palace. Stompe got off to a storming start, racing through the opening two sets without dropping a leg. King, the number five seed, finally broke his duck at the start of the third set, which he went on to take in a deciding leg to reduce his deficit to 2-1. But Stompe continued to make the running in the fourth, taking it 3-1 on legs to re-open his two-set advantage. King stayed alive by edging a tight fifth set in the deciding leg after his opponent missed four match darts at double top. But Stompe quickly put that disappointment behind him, taking out 64 in two darts in the deciding leg of the sixth set to seal victory. "I know what Mervyn can do," said Stompe, who will play either Alan Tabern or Mark Dudbridge in the third round. "The way he plays in the practice room is unbelievable but sometimes he can't always bring it on stage. "When I missed those four darts at double top for the match, he came back with some fantastic finishing. "But I managed to come through in the end and it feels great. If I can play like that and take out my double opportunities when they come, I could go all the way."

McDine sets up Lewis clash

Adrian Lewis averaged over 100 for the second match in a row to see off the spirited challenge of Wes Newton by a 4-2 scoreline. Lewis, from Stoke, finished with an average of 103.68 and had 12 180s during a high quality contest. The opening two sets were over in a flash as Lewis reeled off the first six legs to take control. He added the third set in a deciding leg to move 3-0 ahead but Newton hit back to win both the fourth and fifth sets in deciders. But Lewis was not to be denied and he closed out the result in the fourth leg of the sixth set, which he opened with consecutive 180s before his hopes of a nine-dart finish were dashed with a single 20 on the seventh throw. Lewis' opponent in the last 16 will be Kevin McDine, who booked his place with a 4-0 success against Barrie Bates. The match was not as one sided as the scoreline suggests, Bates losing both of the opening two sets in deciding legs. McDine, who finished with a 95.73 average, pulled away thereafter and dropped just two legs during the final two sets.
