Slovenian fastest on favoured Stelvio piste

Andrej Jerman claimed his first World Cup victory for three years with success in the downhill in Bormio, Italy on Tuesday. Jerman has now picked up five top-10 finishes on the Stelvio piste and made light of the overcast conditions to beat Mario Schreiber by 0.44 seconds, although the Austrian was later disqualified for wearing irregular ski-boots. Didier Defago of Switzerland was promoted to second, 0.53 seconds back and pre-race favorite Michael Walchhofer of Austria was third, 1.03 behind. "If you're first and second in the training runs I don't think it's a surprise to win the race," said Jerman, whose sole previous win came in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. "But I am a little surprised, because I can't remember the last time the guy who won the last training session won the race. "I'm happy I did it again, I didn't want to stay with just one win because they say that one win is the same as no win. "We are still a small team, we don't have as much support as the bigger teams but our coach says that hard work always pays off, and that is what we do, we work hard." Walchhofer won back-to-back downhills on consecutive days here three years ago and was fastest in the opening training session, earning a first downhill podium of the current campaign. Carlo Janka of Switzerland finished 11th which was enough to regain the lead in the overall World Cup standings from Austrian rival Benjamin Raich, who skipped the race. Swiss veteran Didier Cuche placed fifth and retained his lead in the downhill ranks, 251-200 over Walchhofer. Result:
