The Native American Cherokees called it the little brother of war and it was considered as excellent military training and while it may no longer be seen as preparation for the battlefield, it is not a game for the fainthearted.
Lacrosse is growing in popularity, especially amongst students. According to British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) figures, there has been a 90 per cent rise in the number of people playing across a since 2009.
That growth is reflected at all levels of the game. The English Lacrosse League reports a 64 per cent growth in women's clubs while there has been a rise of 96 per cent in community club participation.
