Eight submissions in remarkable Fortaleza event

Fabricio Werdum avenged his previous defeat to Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira with a submission defeat of his idol at UFC on Fuel TV 10. A sensational evening of submissions concluded with Werdum locking in an armbar in the second round as "Big Nog" was forced to tap. This marked the eighth submission of the UFC's event in Fortaleza, Brazil, breaking the record, which previously stood at six, for the most amount of submission victories on a single UFC event. For Werdum, it was a bittersweet triumph as the two coaches of this year's The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil instalment fought it out to bring the series to an end. Werdum lost a unanimous decision to Nogueira when they met seven years ago, but the good friends left friendship to one side in a pulsating opening round. Having secured a takedown early on, Werdum then found himself on the back foot as Nogueira closed the distance and pressed the issue. This resulted in limited striking success, but when Werdum once again took the fight to the ground in the second, "Big Nog" - who has a staggering 21 submission wins to his name - failed to fight himself free and succumbed to an armbar. Werdum and Nogueira's respect for one another was wholly apparent following the conclusion of the bout, with Werdum almost apologetic as he bowed down to his fallen opponent. The win catapults Werdum into UFC heavyweight title contention, but he will inevitably face another fighter first whilst awaiting the victor of the prospective rematch between champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.

Impressive

Thiago Silva returned to the Octagon following a six-month suspension to ruin the UFC debut of Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante. Cavalcante, the former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion, was also making his first appearance following suspension and started brightly when he landed an overhand right. In a thrilling back-and-fourth four minutes, "Feijao" eventually let his hands down and allowed Silva to pummel away as he secured the "Knockout of the Night" bonus. Erick Silva also returned to winning ways with a lightning quick submission of Jason High. It took just under two minutes for the Brazilian welterweight to dispose of his American opponent via a triangle armbar and resume his push up the rankings.

As the second series of TUF: Brazil concluded, Leonardo Santos was crowned the tournament winner with a submission triumph over previously unbeaten William "Patolino" Macario. Having been warned for holding on to the Octagon in the second, things got much worse for "Patolino" as he fell victim to an arm triangle choke with just 17 seconds left remaining ahead of round three. As Santos celebrated his joy with training partner Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champion, the welterweight will now prepare for his first official fight as a member of the UFC roster.
