McClatchey books final spot

Caitlin McClatchey led the British charge in Tuesday morning's swimming qualifiers.

Last Updated: 12/08/08 1:24pm

Caitlin McClatchey led the British charge in Tuesday morning's swimming qualifiers.

The Commonweatlh champion made the final of the women's 200m freestyle, but team-mate Joanne Jackson disappointed with a seventh-placed finish following Monday's bronze medal in the 400m.

Sara Isakovic won Jackson's race in 1min 56.50secs, ahead of American Katie Hoff, with Jackson 2.2secs off the place.

"I felt really, really bad this morning,'' said the 21-year-old Jackson. "I thought I could go quicker than that but it just wasn't in me this morning.

"I'm disappointed but I have the relay to come and I'm really looking forward to that. We have such a great team in the 4x200 relay and hopefully the girls can pick me up from that and we have a good chance.''

In the following semi, McClatchey's 1:57.73 behind world-record holder Federica Pellegrini was enough to put her through to Wednesday's medal race as the seventh-fastest qualifier.

Record

However, both Hannah Miley and Kerri-Anne Payne both missed out on the 200m individual medley final.

Miley was fifth in her loaded semi in 2:12.35, which proved too slow to make the final. Kirsty Coventry won the race it in a new Olympic record, with 400m IM winner Steph Rice second and American Katie Hoff third.

And Payne could manage only eighth in the second semi in 2:14.14 as American Natalie Coughlin, fresh from her 100m backstroke gold, won.

Michael Rock missed out on a place in the men's 200m butterfly final, finishing sixth in his semi behind the legendary Michael Phelps.

The American qualified fastest, with Rock's time 1:55.90.
