Sports fans across Britain and Northern Ireland can now nominate their favourite sportswomen of the year.

The 2015 Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year Awards in association with Vitality, were launched on Sunday with a nationwide call for nominations from the public.

People can put forward the names of their heroines in seven separate award categories.

Now in their 28th year, the awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution to sport made by elite performers, coaches, administrators, community volunteers and inspirational women.

For the next two-and-a-half weeks, people are invited to submit nominations for the seven categories.

Visit the website for all the details: www.swoty2015.co.uk.

The awards presentation will be live on Sky Sports 1 on the evening of Friday November 6, and, for the first time, simultaneously on Sky 1.

Maggie Alphonsi discusses the impact on women's sport that the Sportswomen Awards have had.

Alphonsi said: "These awards are really important because they shine a light on women's sport generally and also allows us an opportunity to recognise the contribution and effort that a lot of top female athletes have brought to women's sport generally in Britain.

"Having awards like these will help raise the recognition of women's sport and show people that women are doing very well out there.

"We have started to see more women's sport on terrestrial TV, and on Sky Sports, which is really good because that makes a big difference. If people can see it, it's on TV, more people will watch it, more people will engage and sponsors will add their names to it."

The Sportswomen Awards are among the most prestigious and influential in the British sporting calendar and are once again supported by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, UK Sport, Sport England and Women in Sport.

The seven award categories are:

Sunday Times & Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Year 2015 - the ultimate accolade for your favourite Sportswoman of 2015.

Vitality Team of the Year - celebrating the achievements of Britain's successful collective efforts.

Young Sportswoman of the Year - nominees must have been 21 or younger on January 1, 2015.
