England took their second win in two matches at the Snooker World Cup after a 3-2 victory over Belgium.
Selby on form as Belgium are defeated at World Cup
England took their second win in two matches at the Snooker World Cup as Mark Selby and Ali Carter claimed a 3-2 victory over Belgium's Bjorn Haneveer and Luca Brecel.
Selby grabbed his team's first century break of the competition in his singles frame against Brecel, as England moved up to second place behind Northern Ireland in Group C.
Selby secured the win in the fourth frame after earlier beating Bjorn Haneveer, while England also won the doubles frame but Carter lost both his singles contests.
"It's a team game and I played okay myself and there will be another time when I don't play well and Ali will do," Selby said.
"At the end of the day we won and that's the important thing. It could've been a better score but the important thing is to get the win."
Wales climbed to the top of Group A as Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens combined to secure a 3-2 win over Germany.
China won their second straight match of the competition as they beat the United Arab Emirates 3-2 in Group B while the second Thailand team lost 4-1 to Hong Kong, with Marco Fu and Fung Kwok Wai moving to the top of Group D.
Doherty down
Ken Doherty apologised for his performance and offered to "give people their money back" despite leading the Republic of Ireland to their first win of the World Cup with a 4-1 victory over Group A rivals Egypt.
Doherty and team-mate Fergal O'Brien, who were part of the team that reached the final of the last World Cup back in 1996, needed to win after crashing to a 3-2 defeat to Pakistan on Monday.
But Doherty felt Wednesday's victory came at the expense of entertaining snooker.
"I'm really sorry and want to apologise for that match. We should give the people their money back for having to sit through it," he said.
Battle
"It was a battle, but we don't care. On paper it says 4-1 and it doesn't matter how you got the four - we needed to win by that scoreline to get us back into contention
"You only enjoy the winning part, you can't enjoy a match like that.
"The other players will take the mick but we don't care - I started off clean shaven and I now have a beard."
Northern Ireland and Scotland also completed 4-1 victories, with both matches completed before the Republic of Ireland had seen off Egypt.
Northern Ireland, represented by Mark Allen and Gerard Greene, moved to the top of Group C with a dominant display over Brazil, while Scotland also maintained their 100 per cent start to the competition as John Higgins and Stephen Maguire beat Afghanistan.
Malta beat Thailand 3-2 in Group B to pick up their first win of the tournament.
