Having come from 4-0 down the beat Neil Robertson in the quarter-finals, Selby clawed the scoreline back to 4-4 ahead of 11 possible frames in the evening at the Barbican Centre in York.

Murphy had drawn first blood after a wretched attempted escape by Selby from a safety presented an early chance to put points on the board, while he then led 49-0 in the second frame.

However, he was unfortunate to pot the cue ball as well as a long red and Selby fired in a frame-clinching 54 break, which he followed with a 66 in the next.

Runs of 83 and 98 either side of the interval allowed Murphy, who had produced a great escape against Ali Carter ealier in the tournament, rallying from a 8-4 deficit to triumph 9-8, to edge ahead again.

He then moved two frames clear when taking a scrappy sixth frame that lasted 52 minutes, only for the gritty Selby to peg him back.

The Leicester potter, who will reclaim the world number one ranking from Judd Trump due to his run in York, managed a 70 break to win the next before making it four apiece in the final frame.
