Murphy produced the highest break of the tournament so far, and also racked up a break of 81, as he outclassed his opponent, who managed just 40 points in the match.

"I felt a bit sorry for David because I could see his wasn't used to the table and the way the TV tables play," Murphy said on worldsnooker.com.

"I remember my first time out there, the tables seem to be different, and he missed a few shots just because he didn't know the table. I was able to capitalise on the mistakes and played well."

Murphy believes his new fitness regime is helping with his form, having lost more than three stone.

"The work on the physical side of things has helped me because I feel better and I don't get as out of breath or hot and sweaty," he added. "My self esteem has gone up as well so that helps me feel better in the arena, so when bad things happen I cope with them a little better."

World number one Neil Robertson also enjoyed smooth passage into round two, although the Australian did drop a frame in beating 16-year-old Chinese rising star Lu Haotian 4-1.

Robertson was unable to add to his 86 centuries this season, though, having to make do with runs of 78, 83 and 84.

"I thought I played really well, I'm just absolutely sick that I didn't make three centuries in that match," he said.

Mark Davis, the world number 13, survived a fightback from 17-year-old Alexander Ursenbacher in Switzerland, squandering a 3-0 lead before finally getting over the line 4-3.

Graeme Dott made breaks of 77, 98, 54 and 54 in his 4-0 success over Lee Page.

Stuart Bingham was also a 4-0 winner, sweeping aside Daniel Wells, while Joe Perry had to battle to overcome Allan Taylor 4-3.

Other winners on Friday were Peter Lines, Joel Walker, Michael Holt, Liu Chuang, Rory McLeod, Ben Woollaston, Mark Joyce, Alfie Burden, Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Jamie Jones.
