UK Championship: Ronnie O'Sullivan hit a 147 break and Marco Fu won a last-gasp thriller
Thursday 4 December 2014 23:29, UK
Ronnie O'Sullivan scored a maximum break of 147 to cap off a 6-0 thrashing of Matthew Selt in the UK Championship in York.
The stunning break was the 13th 147 of O'Sullivan's career and extended his own all-time record to propel him into the quarter-finals at the Barbican Centre.
The blue ball threatened to ruin his moment by taking a split-second before dropping in, but it was ultimately a rout for the 38-year-old as he completed a fourth-round whitewash in the evening session on Thursday.
It was the 109th 147 in snooker history and will earn O'Sullivan £44,000 if no one else matches it.
O'Sullivan meets Anthony McGill for a place in the semi-finals as he continues his bid for a fifth UK title.
Earlier, Marco Fu potted the last black ball to edge a 6-5 thriller over Shaun Murphy and progress to the quarters.
The Hong Kong star gained a measure of revenge for Murphy’s 2008 final victory over him with this last-gasp effort in the afternoon session.
Murphy seemed on course to repeat that win by building a 5-3 lead - the highlight was a 137 break in the fifth frame - but Fu battled back to 5-5.
Murphy made a break of 54 to give himself a clear advantage in the final frame but snookered himself, allowing Fu to roar back and pot every colour to win the decider 74-62.
Fu next faces Stephen Maguire who defeated David Morris 6-3.
Judd Trump, the 2011 champion, is also in the last eight after overcoming Rod Lawler 6-3.
A 102 break in the opener suggested Trump would ease through but Lawler threatened a big upset by winning the next two frames.
However, Trump took five of the next six (including a 112 break in the ninth) to set up a quarter-final tie with Mark Davis.
