Crucible runner-up wants ranking title and world number one spot.

World Championship runner-up Mark Selby hopes to make another big impact in a ranking event at the Northern Ireland Trophy. Selby came from nowhere to fire his way into the Crucible final with some fine snooker in Sheffield, and was only denied a shock victory by John Higgins. 24-year-old Selby stuttered at the Grand Prix in Aberdeen last month, and is now desperate to challenge for a title again in Belfast. The Leicester potter will start his campaign on Wednesday at the Waterfront Hall by taking on either Jamie Burnett or Beckenham professional Barry Hawkins. Selby says that he wants to build his achievements at the Crucible, and has targeted the Northern Ireland Trophy. "I want to build on what I achieved at the Crucible," said Selby. "At the Crucible I just wanted to enjoy it and show a bit more of my personality rather than just playing snooker. "I hope I did that, but I certainly enjoyed every minute of the tournament. In the past I had tried too hard at tournaments and I was often playing not to lose rather than being positive and playing to win. "But I've not done much this season yet and it would be great if I can have a decent run in Belfast."

Top spot

Selby's improvement has seen him jumped up the rankings into fifth place in the provisional world standings, and he has his sights firmly set on being number one some day. "Ever since I was a junior player, I've wanted to be world champion and world No 1," added Selby. "I've wanted to be in the limelight, so I'm really enjoying having a higher profile now. "My target for the season is to win a tournament and to establish myself in the top eight of the rankings. "I'm up to fourth but it's fairly close from second down to seventh so there's still a lot of points to be earned."
