Welshman wins five out of six frames to see off world number one

Defending champion John Higgins was dumped out in the second round at the Crucible as Ryan Day stormed to a 13-9 victory on Saturday morning in Sheffield. World number one Higgins had been 4-0 and 6-3 ahead during the match, but Welshman Day had drawn level on Friday to ensure they started the final session locked at 8-8. Day flew out of the traps at the start of the session and quickly rattled off the first three frames despite making a highest break of just 49, but it was enough to put him within two frames of victory. Higgins finally found some fight as he scrapped to try and defend his title, and a fine break of 83 got him back into the contest at 11-9. Day then took the next to move just a frame away from the quarter-finals, and he made a break of 48 in the next frame before missing a red along the cushion. Higgins came to the table but missed an easy pot and left the door wide open for Day and this time he made no mistake as completed a shock 13-9 victory, and set up a quarter-final date with Stephen Hendry. Hendry earned a regulation 13-7 victory over Ding Junhui in their match - easily proving too much for the Chinese star.

Robertson mauling

Meanwhile, Stephen Maguire won all eight frames during the first session of his second-round meeting with Neil Robertson. The Glasgow potter won two scrappy opening frames and then rolled in breaks of 50 and 131 to lead 4-0 at the mid-session interval. And Maguire continued his hot-streak after returning from the break, runs of 62, 110, 79 and 67 sealing the session whitewash, a feat he also achieved during his first-round victory over Anthony Hamilton.
