Michael Bisping to face Yoel Romero in middleweight title defence
Wednesday 1 February 2017 13:17, UK
Michael Bisping will face Yoel Romero in the defence of his middleweight title later this year.
The Manchester fighter is currently out of action after undergoing knee surgery.
He had talked about facing Georges St-Pierre, Tyrone Woodley and Anderson Silva. But UFC president Dana White says Cuban Romero deserves his shot.
White told UFC Unfiltered: "Yoel Romero's been floating out there a long time waiting for a title shot.
"Bisping wanted to do that grudge match with Dan Henderson. It was going to be Dan Henderson's last fight. I've always shown Henderson the respect I felt he deserved.
"He's a guy who's fought everybody out there. So we did that fight and he's got to defend his title now against the No 1 contender.
Romero is a former Olympic wrestler, and won silver in the 2000 Games in Athens.
