John Cena: Who will WWE United States Champion wrestle next?
One or two opponents would make things personal...
Wednesday 7 October 2015 13:22, UK
Having seen off Seth Rollins, John Cena is looking for fresh contenders for his United States Title.
The Cenation Leader has defended his strap against some of WWE's most promising Superstars in recent months, including Kevin Owens and Neville.
But with the West Newbury native bringing his open challenge back to Raw, who else could try to nab his belt? Here are some candidates…
DOLPH ZIGGLER
Ah, the bout we should have got on Monday night. The Show-Off was primed to combat Cena in Boston - until The New Day attacked him backstage. Cena is a sporting chap, though, so should give Ziggler a second chance and if he does, a thrilling clash should ensue. Not just because Ziggler is one of the most dynamic and athletic performers on the roster, combining the technical attributes he learnt in his amateur wrestling days with a series of high-impact moves, but also because there is a backstory; Cena and Ziggler were enemies in late 2012 while squabbling over the Money in the Bank contract and allies while taking down The Authority at last year's Survivor Series. The fact Cena's current girlfriend, Nikki Bella, used to date Ziggler makes a potential scrap even more intriguing…
CESARO
Cesaro carried the United States Championship with distinction between August 2012 and April 2013 - for 239 days, to be precise - and very nearly won it back during two epic matches with Cena on Raw over the summer. The Swiss Superman was scuppered first time around by Owens, the Canadian interfering in the contest with Cesaro having locked in the sharpshooter on the champion, while in his second encounter with Cena, which must be a major contender for Match of the Year, the European unleashed uppercuts and suplexes galore, as well as the Neutralizer, before falling victim to an Attitude Adjustment from the turnbuckle. The uber-slick Cesaro warrants another shot and hopefully this time he rolls out the superbly-named Alpamare Waterslide manoeuvre.
DANIEL BRYAN
The fan favourite is currently awaiting the all-clear to return to action after a glut of injuries but if and when he does lace up his boots again, who better to compete against than Cena? Bryan bested the man from Massachusetts with a Running Knee to pinch the world title at SummerSlam 2013 - moments before Randy Orton, with the help of Triple H, stole it from him via his Money in the Bank contract - but a victory for Cena over the submission specialist when Monday Night Raw hit Texas almost a year earlier is the only other singles encounter the pair have contested. Who doesn't want to see a rubber match? And if Ziggler versus Cena would bring personal lives into the equation, then so would Bryan against Cena, with the bearded grappler married to Nikki's twin sister, Brie Bella.
THE UNDERTAKER
The Phenom and The Cenation Leader last met in singles action way back on in Raw 2006, a clash that ended as a no-contest, so it's about time they locked horns again. The record books show the Superstars are level at 2-2, with The Undertaker prevailing at the 2003 Vengeance event and on an episode of Smackdown in 2004 and Cena countering with triumphs on the blue brand 12 years ago, meaning one more match is needed to decide the better man. Taker - whose sole concern at the minute is to conquer The Conqueror, Brock Lesnar, inside Hell in a Cell on October 25 - only appears fleetingly these days and is therefore unlikely to answer Cena's open challenge on a Monday night but if the champ is still champ come WrestleMania 32, wouldn't that be a stellar setting for a scrap?
FINN BALOR
For those of you who don't know Balor, where have you been? The high-octane, Tottenham Hotspur-supporting Irishman has been tearing it up on WWE NXT since debuting last autumn, firstly teaming with fellow international sensation Hideo Itami to down The Ascension and then, in his second home of Japan in early July, defeating Cena's former rival Owens to become NXT Champion. The softly-spoken Wicklow wrestler amps up his appearance at the big events, too, coating himself in his signature body paint to add even more mystique his arsenal. Balor has topped the mountain in NXT and it's surely only a matter of time before he is a regular fixture on Raw. Battling the guy who has been WWE's kingpin for more than a decade would be a way to make an immediate impact.
