Seth Rollins laid out Roman Reigns with a Pedigree at Extreme Rules just moments after the WWE World Heavyweight Champion had beaten AJ Styles to retain his title.

Rollins, forced to vacate the world championship in November after sustaining a long-term knee injury, then signalled his intention to reclaim the belt by holding it above his head.

Reigns, meanwhile, had pinned Styles to win a thrilling Extreme Rules Match, during which Styles was thundered through tables but also launched a frenzied attack with a steel chair.

The Phenomenal One's allies, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, and Reigns' cousins, Jimmy and Jey Uso - who met in a Tornado Tag Team Match earlier in the night, won by Gallows and Anderson - also become involved.

But Reigns prevailed when he evaded a Phenomenal Forearm and planted Styles with a Spear to retain the championship he has carried since overcoming Triple H in the main event of WrestleMania 32.

The Miz, The New Day and Charlotte also retained their titles in New Jersey, though Kalisto lost his United States Championship to a reinvigorated Rusev.

Intercontinental Champion The Miz pinned Cesaro in a Fatal-Four Way, The Awesome One pouncing on the stricken Swiss while the match's other two competitors, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, brawled at ringside.

WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day, represented by Big E and Xavier Woods, knocked off The Vaudevillains, Woods covering Simon Gotch after connecting with a Shining Wizard.

Plus, Charlotte retained the Women's Championship with a submission victory over Natalya - but only after the challenger had been distracted by Dana Brooke posing as the champion's father, Ric Flair.

Rusev also left Extreme Rules with gold in tow by submitting Kalisto with The Accolade, the Bulgarian now a two-time United States Champion having initially held the strap in late 2014 and early 2015.

Dean Ambrose won the evening's other contest, an Asylum Match, by throwing Chris Jericho onto a pile of drawing pins and levelling the veteran with Dirty Deeds.
