Rollins loses one title…
While Sting waited in the wings to challenge The Architect for the world title later in the show, Rollins' first task was to defend the United States strap against Cena, having prised it from the Cenation Leader at SummerSlam after former Daily Show host Jon Stewart clobbered 15-time world champion with a steel chair. Rollins tried to level Cena with his own move, an Attitude Adjustment, but that ploy did not work and Cena won back his belt after hitting an AA on Rollins. He then blasted Rollins with another Attitude Adjustment moments later as The Aerialist attempted to slink to the back and away from his second title defence of the evening…
But wins another!
Having just competed in a 16-minute match against Cena, Rollins perhaps wasn't in the best shape to put his world title on the line against Sting in the WCW legend's first WWE main event and maiden shot at the company's top prize - and also what turned out to be his final match. The Icon recovered from slipping through the announce desk early in the bout to batter Rollins with a Scorpion Death Drop and pain him with a Scorpion Death Lock, but the face-painted star came up short when Rollins caught him in a roll-up pin. All manner of carnage took place post-match - Sheamus tried to cash-in his Money in the Bank contract, Kane choke-slammed Rollins and Sheamus before hitting the former with a Tombstone Piledriver - but it was Sting who suffered the most hurt, with the neck injury he sustained while fighting Rollins forcing him to retire.
Charlotte wins Divas Title
Sasha Banks' recent 27-day stint with the Raw Women's Title is the only time in the past year that Charlotte has not held gold, with her dominance among WWE females starting at Night of Champions 2015. Having failed to claim the Divas Title on an episode of Raw when she pinned the wrong Bella twin - then champion Nikki had switched places with sister Brie mid-match - Charlotte finally overcame Nikki in Texas when she speared the title holder and applied the Figure Eight Leglock. The Nature Girl has gone from strength-to-strength since, despite her nefarious tactics seeing her transform into anything but a fan favourite, and ensured she won back her title at the first time of asking at SummerSlam after shipping it to Banks on the July 25 edition of Raw.
DQ triumph for The Dudley Boyz
Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley departed WWE earlier this summer after being unable to claim the company's Tag Team Titles for a 10th time, with one of the veteran duo's near misses coming at Night of Champions. Bubba and D-Von had looked strong since returning a day after SummerSlam, even knocking off The New Day in a non-title tussle on Raw, but when it came to their big championship opportunity, they were scuppered by trombone-extraordinaire Xavier Woods, the non-competing member of The New Day. Woods broke up Bubba's pin attempt on Kingston after his mate had been blasted with a 3D, handing The Dudley Boyz the win but ensuring Kingston and Big E retained the titles. Woods' punishment? He was smashed through a table, of course!
Owens lands Intercontinental Title
Owens is sitting pretty as Universal Champion heading into Sunday night's big show and he has fond memories of this event - it was where he scooped his first singles championship on WWE's main roster, the Intercontinental Title. The Canadian had spent the summer battling John Cena and Cesaro but as autumn rolled around he set his sights on then Intercontinental king, Ryback, attacking The Big Guy on Raw en route to being handed a championship opportunity. Followers of Owens will know he's not above dirty moves and he used a rake to the eyes to help end his rival's sole reign with a WWE title at 112 days. Ryback failed to recover from that loss and parted ways with WWE in August this year.
Jericho crushed by Strowman
As well as learning who would leave the Toyota Center with gold, WWE fans also tuned into Night of Champions to see who Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose would enlist to help them tackle The Wyatt Family in a six-man tag match. The rumour mill swirled, with some even suggesting that Rollins - as if he didn't have enough on his plate! - could compete and ensure a one-night-only reunion of The Shield. Alas not, with Jericho, replete with his customary light-dotted coat, the man to step up. Eager to earn the win for his team, Jericho tagged in after Reigns floored Strowman with a spear but his Codebreaker attempt on Strowman failed and he passed out to the giant's triangle choke. Will Jericho enjoy better luck against Sami Zayn this weekend?
