Samoa Joe became the first two-time WWE NXT Champion as he beat Shinsuke Nakamura at TakeOver: Toronto on Saturday night.

Joe blasted Nakamura with a low blow behind the referee's back before chucking his opponent into the steel ring steps and then sealing his victory by hitting a Muscle Buster.

The powerhouse's win saw him regain the belt he shipped to Nakamura at NXT TakeOver's event in Brooklyn in August and ended the Japanese's reign at 91 days.

Nakamura's compatriot, NXT Women's Champion Asuka, was able to retain her title, though, with a submission triumph over the returning Mickie James.

James, a four-time Women's Champion and one-time Divas Champion, fought gamely but eventually tapped out to the Asuka Lock in her first match for WWE in over six years.

Elsewhere in Canada, there was tag-team success for Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa aka #DIY, as well as The Authors of Pain, Rezar and Akam.

Gargano and Ciampa downed The Revival in a two-out-of-three falls match to become NXT Tag Team Champions for the first time, the challengers nicking the contest 2-1 with a dual submission.

Plus, Rezar and Akam beat TM-61's Shane Thorne and Nick Miller to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic - thanks to an assist from their manager, WWE Hall of Famer Paul Ellering.

Ellering was suspended in a cage above the ring to prevent him from interfering but still managed to drop a chain to Rezar behind the official's back.

Rezar and Akam then pummelled Thorne with The Last Chapter to claim the trophy won last year by Samoa Joe and Ireland's Finn Balor.

Plus, Bobby Roode beat Tye Dillinger in a battle of the Canadians, the former pinning the latter after hurling him into the ring post and connecting with a DDT.
