WWE star Kane - real name Glenn Jacobs - has taken a step closer to becoming an elected mayor in Tennessee.

Jacobs secured the GOP nomination in the early hours of Wednesday morning, meaning he will taking on Linda Haney, who won the Democratic primary last month, in the battle to become mayor of Knox County.

The man who was known as The Big Red Machine during his time in the ring wrote on Twitter: "Thanks to everyone who helped win this historic victory!! The people who cast a ballot for me, my great team, my wonderful volunteers. Looking forward to VICTORY in the general election!"

The final round of the general election takes place in early August as Jacobs bids to follow Jesse Ventura's journey from pro wrestling into politics.

Ventura, who was an AWA tag team champion and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, was the governor of Minnesota between 1999 and 2003.
