Juan Pablo Montoya stormed to an unlikely victory to claim the second Indy 500 win of his career on Sunday.
The Team Penske driver started the race in 15th but an opening lap crash ahead of him, the Colombian was shunted from behind, forcing him to pit.
He rejoined the race in 30th place but came through the field and following another restart 15 laps from the end, Montoya found himself locked in a three-way battle for the lead alongside team-mate Will Power and Ganassi driver Scott Dixon.
And Montoya, whose last Indy win came in 2000 before he moved on to F1, managed to pull clear, finishing ahead of Power in second and Ganassi driver Charlie Kimball who was third, ahead of team-mate Dixon.
"This is what racing in IndyCar is all about awesome racing all the way down to the wire," Monytoya said after the race.
Team Penske chief Roger Penske added: "Montoya coming from all the way in the back, I'll tell you, you give that guy the bit and put it in his mouth... he doesn't give up.
