Donald Trump to honour NBA legend Jerry West with Presidential Medal of Freedom

US President Donald Trump says that LA Lakers and NBA legend Jerry West will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

West, a member of the basketball Hall of Fame played guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, winning one NBA title in 1972, and played college basketball at West Virginia University.

"The Great Jerry West will be receiving our Nation's highest civilian honor, The Presidential Medal of Freedom, for his outstanding career, both on and off the court," tweeted Trump on Saturday night.

West, known as "The Logo" as the NBA's brand is based on a silhouette of him in action, was a 14-time All Star and was voted to the NBA first team 10 times.

As an executive and general manager West oversaw an incredible eight NBA titles at the Lakers, first with Magic Johnson's "Showtime" Lakers of the 1980s, then with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in the 2000s.

No date was announced for when the 81-year-old will receive the award.
