New York Knicks conspire to score 'own goal' in long-awaited win over San Antonio Spurs

The New York Knicks may have avoided breaking a franchise record for consecutive home defeats on Sunday, but it didn't come without an element of farce.
Early on in the 130-118 win over the San Antonio Spurs, LaMarcus Aldridge's jump shot hit the front of the rim and looked to be bouncing clear, with three Knicks players in close attendance for the rebound.
But with all five Spurs players giving up on the play and retreating, one of Lance Thomas, Dennis Smith Jr and Kevin Knox looked poised to claim the ball.
But it was a case of 'too many cooks' as both Smith and Knox jumped for the ball, were unable to claim it cleanly and succeeded only in knocking it back through the hoop for an 'own goal'.
Aldridge was credited with the basket as the nearest San Antonio player to the action at the moment the ball went through the hoop.
Of course, it didn't matter, as the Knicks ran out comfortable winners to end their consecutive home losing streak at 18, although they remain firmly rooted to the foot of the Eastern Conference.
