A victory rally to mark the Toronto Raptors' first-ever NBA championship win was overshadowed by a shooting near to the parade's final destination

Gunshots have been fired in the vicinity of the Toronto Raptors' homecoming parade following their historic NBA championship win.

Toronto Police said four people were wounded, adding the injuries they sustained were serious but not life-threatening.

Three people have been arrested, and two firearms have also been recovered following the incident near to Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square, the parade's final destination. An investigation is underway.

Toronto Police chief Mark Saunders said: "With all the resources that were here, the apprehensions were done incredibly quickly after the incident itself.

"It's really early [in the investigation] and we are trying to see what roles, if any, the people we apprehended have in this case. We do have people arrested with firearms and that's the start of the investigation."

Toronto Mayor John Tory added: "It is disappointing and I'm sure a source of anger for more than just me that anyone would carry a gun and discharge at what was otherwise a joyous celebration."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among two million fans who attended the Raptors' victory rally in Toronto on Monday.

Five double-decker buses carrying the Raptors players, their families and musician Drake moved at a crawl during the parade due to the crowds.

The Raptors clinched the best-of-seven series in Oakland, California last Thursday in six games by beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 114-110.

The win for the Raptors was the first major professional sports championship for a Canada-based team since Major League Baseball's Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series in 1993.
